Hello and welcome to the Clare Wood Podcast. This is your weekly dose of all things money, to help you intentionally create a profitable business and a life you love. I have the difficult conversations about money, so you can make more money with ease. Each week, I share how you can use mindset and the practical foundations of finance to elevate your earnings, without sacrificing the things that are important to you, because you can and should be making more money.
Before I dive into today’s episode, a bit of a shameless plug for the Profit Party, my book launch event, which is happening in Sydney on Thursday, the 27th of April. The Brisbane event was a massive success. This is not some boring book launch event. It was literally a networking event with heaps of giggles, interaction and a great way to connect with and network with other successful business owners. So, if you haven’t already, and you are in Sydney or the surrounds, make sure you go and check out the Profit Party. The link is in the show notes for today’s episode to join us for the Sydney Profit Party, happening on the 27th of April. I would love to see you there.
We also have the Melbourne event happening on the 18th of May. Thursday, the 18th of May. Mark the diary. Melbourne, I’m coming for you, too. The tickets will be available soon, and I will share here on the podcast when those are available.
I have had some requests on Instagram in my DMs to come to some other cities, too, so I’m seeing what we can do in that space. If you would like me to come to you, drop me a DM on Instagram, and I’ll keep you posted if I am able to extend the book tour.
Another shameless plug before I start today’s episode. Don’t forget that I have my VIP days now available, which is my hands-on, strategic session where I sit with you one-on-one and help you to get super clear about your goals in business, and then map out a step-by-step action plan of how to get from where you are to where you want to be, including a breakdown of your financial plan. That means month by month working out what is possible for your sales and the investments that you can make in your business to get there. This is completely tailored to your business, done in a one-on-one setting. I get such great feedback about these sessions, and I still have a few spots available for the coming months, so, please, go and click on the link in the show notes for today’s episode if you’d like to do a one-on-one coaching session with me.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s have a little bit of a chat about creating your most successful life. I did a VIP day with a client this week, and we were mapping out what her business could look like. Now, my VIPs aren’t some airy-fairy, sit down and have a chat. We literally mapped out her entire product suite and even a budget for what would be possible. When I went through and showed her the plan, I said, “Does this excite you? Can you see what’s possible?” She came back to me and said, “It does excite me, but I don’t know if it’s possible for me.” What she was saying was that, “Yes, I can see how that’s possible, but I just don’t know if it’s possible for me.” The “for me” was the telling part.
If this resonates with you, I want you to check in. Why do you think you are not worthy of everything you want? Why do you think you’re not worthy of the things that you see other people doing on Instagram, the fancy holidays, owning the home? I don’t know, whatever it is that you see people doing that really inspires or perhaps even triggers you a bit. Can I ask you, why do you think you are not worthy of that?
I used to have a ton of reasons. For example, I used to think, “I’m so much older than everyone else here on Instagram.” I’d think, “I’m a mom. I’ve got kids. There’s no way I can be going and having these overseas jaunts. I came from a lower socioeconomic upbringing. Who am I to think that I can live in a beachfront home? I mean, that’s just ridiculous.” Now, these excuses were very real to me, but even saying them out loud now, I realize these are not valid reasons not to be successful.
If this is resonating for you, and you are thinking, “I won’t even allow myself to want those things, because it’s not possible for me,” something I’d really empower you to do is to look for role models of people who are doing what you want, who are achieving what you want, and who you can resonate or connect with on some level. It doesn’t mean they need to have the same cultural background or be the same age. But perhaps someone who’s been on a similar journey. Someone who didn’t come from a wealthy family who has built a successful life. Someone who’s a mom who’s doing amazing things. Find a common thread and look for people that are doing what you want to do and unlocking what is possible for you. Once you’ve done that, you can release the story that it’s not possible, because you’re like, “Well, hang on. It’s possible for someone else.” So you’ve already unlocked that first part of the mindset battle.
The next bit is to check in on why you don’t think it’s possible for you. If you recognize that it’s possible for other people, why is it not possible for you? So check in on the reasons that you are stopping yourself from creating the life that you want.
A great little activity that we can do in this space, I want you to ask, “What would be the negative consequences if I had that thing?” For example, one thing that I would love to make a standard in my life is that I travel business class all the time. Now, what would be the negative consequence of that? You might think nothing. However, all kinds of stuff comes up for me. I think, “Imagine if I’m sharing that on social media and people start to think that I’m really up myself. Maybe my friends, my childhood friends, my friends from now, wouldn’t like me anymore. They might think that I’ve got a bit arrogant or too big for my boots.”
When it comes to creating more money in general, to having more wealth, there’s a ton of stories that came up for me that had negative consequences. Let me share what some of those are.
One was that people will expect me to shout things all the time. If I’m really rich, and we go out for dinner, my friends will expect me to pay for dinner for everyone.
Another one is that I won’t be down to earth anymore. I really value the concept that I am very down to earth, and I don’t want to become too fancy and posh. Obviously, I’ve got some stories, some negative connotations about that, but this has been a real fear of mine.
Another story that I’ve had to work through is that if I’m really rich or wealthy, I’ll have to work harder, right? When you don’t have things, you don’t have as much to lose. But when you’ve got it all, there’s an expectation that you need to be working hard all the time, and that’s scary.
Another fear of mine is that no matter how much I make, how much I have, that I’ll always want more and more, and that it’ll never be enough.
You can see how all of these negative stories that’s sitting in my subconscious mind play out into the way that I show up. Because, I don’t want people to think that I’m up myself. I don’t want to have to shout people everything all the time. And so, there’s this part of my subconscious mind that’s sabotaging my success if I hold onto those stories. This is why I’ve been able to identify these stories and work through them.
If you stay stuck in your stories, you’ll keep playing things out the way that you always have, so you really need to recognize what those stories are, process them, and write your new and more aligned stories.
I’d love to ask you now, check in, what are your stories about why you don’t want to be rich? Now, maybe they aren’t sitting on the surface for you. You might think, “Of course, I want to be rich.” You might need to dig a little bit deeper and unlock those stories that are sitting in the subconscious. What are your stories that are holding you back? The foundations of money mindset are things that I’ve spoken about on the podcast before, and this is something that I’m so passionate about teaching business owners, to change and to shift if they want to create incredible transformational results in their business and their life. The foundation to this, your beliefs shape your actions and your actions create your outcomes.
If you subconsciously don’t want to be rich, you won’t take aligned action, and therefore, you won’t get rich. I believe that we all have the potential to create our most amazing, successful and abundant lives. Particularly if you are here listening to this podcast, you were most likely born into privilege, if you’ve got access to the internet and whatever device you’re listening to it on. Maybe you’re in a car right now. If you are listening to this, you are already luckier than most people on the planet, so rather than focusing on lack, look at how lucky and privileged you already are, and allow yourself to desire even more.
Let’s flip the narrative around what is possible and what you can do if you are to become a wildly wealthy person. Have a think about this. What positive effect would your success have on you, your family, your friends, your community and the planet? Take a few moments and think about it. Because whenever I’m feeling guilt about privilege and about, “I’ve already got an amazing life. Who am I to want more?” I get to check in on what even more money could do both in my life, but also, of all of the people around me.
An example of this, inside the community, I’m able to invest more back into organizations and charities that I care about. I’m able to plant trees, and that is of a result of money.
So take a few moments, and think about it. Instead of thinking, “It’s not for me,” reframe it to, “Why not me?” The more you start to recognize that you are just as worthy of success as the next person, the sooner it will start to become your reality.
Today’s episode is just a teaser of the power of mindset. I can’t wait to teach you all of this inside my course accelerator, which is launching soon. But, for now, hopefully I’ve given you a few things to think about, and you can see that success and wealth are totally available for you if you want it and are willing to take the steps to get there. Thanks for tuning in, and I’ll chat to you again next week.
I hope you are feeling inspired and excited about what is possible for you when it comes to money. It takes a lot of time and energy to create a podcast, so I’d be very grateful if you could take the time to hit subscribe, write me a review and share any of your favorite episodes with your audience on social media. The more people that we can reach, the more people we can empower to earn more in their business, because you can and should be earning more money.
