Lessons from buying my beach house

For years, I have dreamed of owning a house near the beach. And earlier this year, it finally came true. We now have our home living on the water, right near the beach. In today’s episode of the podcast, I’m going to share with you some of my biggest lessons about creating something really cool and amazing in my life so that it might be able to help you do the same.

The backstory of my beach house dream

Let me share a little bit more of the backstory about this house by the beach. For years now, this has been a dream of mine and my husband’s, is to live by the water and be able to be in walking distance to the beach. In early 2021, I had an opportunity to put in an offer on a house that got accepted, and we came very, very close to owning what we were calling the dream house. It was on the water. It had its own pontoon to be able to fish off or park a boat, a swimming pool. It was a beautiful two-story house, and we truly, truly thought that that was our dream house. Unfortunately, though, it did not go ahead at the last minute due to an issue with the financing. And you can imagine how heartbreaking it was for us at the time. However, we kept the faith, kept on believing that it would happen. And now less than a year later, we were able to buy a house, and get this. It’s only four houses down from that exact house that we nearly bought early in 2021. Now, admittedly, this house is not quite as fancy. It doesn’t have a pontoon yet, nor does it have a swimming pool yet. And it is a much smaller house. However, we love it here. It is on our dream street and we are just totally immersed in the beach lifestyle now and loving it.

Let me share a little bit about the lessons that I have learned in this process.

How manifestations can come through in ways you don’t expect

The first lesson is that you might get the things that you want in a slightly different way than you had planned. And even if it’s not exactly what you wanted, it might even work out better than what you had wanted. As I shared earlier, this house certainly doesn’t tick all the boxes in terms of the actual house. However, we will now be in, I guess, a much bigger rush to build our dream house here. And the house that we do build will be absolutely perfect because we can customise it to exactly what we want, whereas with that other house we had to work with what was there. So inside the new home, we can have every bedroom exactly where we want it and exactly how we want it. And I’m even going to build a podcasting studio so the sound will be amazing when I do move into the new place. In this house as well, we have already discovered that we have the most amazing neighbours. We’ve already been invited over to three separate people’s houses for dinner and drinks. And we wonder if being even just a few doors up, if maybe we would’ve had a different experience because we wouldn’t have had the same proximity to the beautiful people that we have connected with already in our new neighborhood.

And this has happened sometimes in business as well. Have you ever had the experience where you have an idea in your mind about how things are going to play out? An example of this is I’ve launched one of my courses and it didn’t go to plan and it’s so easy to go into victim mode and think it’s never going to happen. But when you keep the faith, sometimes something different to what you’d planned plays out, but it can be even better. Some examples of this is after a launch didn’t go plan, I’ve signed on a new private coaching client who is absolutely amazing. And I think that maybe wouldn’t have happened had my launch gone to plan.

Why you should never give up on your dreams

The second big lesson from buying this house is that you should never give up on your dreams. As I shared, we could have given up on the whole idea of moving to the beach so many times. In the past year, the housing market has absolutely rocketed and it could have been so easy to say this simply isn’t going to happen, but we never gave up faith and kept on believing.

There are so many things that can happen in life that can take several tries. You don’t even want to know how many failed dates and relationships I had before I finally met my husband. Failure is part of success. You have to accept that sometimes things won’t go to plan and that’s okay. Sometimes it can take a little bit longer to hit those goals of yours, but on the flip side, sometimes things can happen even sooner than you had originally hoped for. The opportunity is to continue blurring the lines between reality and your dreams.

So even though we’ve only just moved into this house, we talk about the dream house constantly. We talk about what it’s going to look like, how it’s going to feel when we live there. And because we talk about it all the time, my kids are already asking, “Why don’t we have the dream house yet?” We allowed them to play along in the process as well. And one of them has a put in an order that they’re going to have a slide from their bedroom all the way down to the swimming pool. And we just allow them to get creative, have some fun with dreaming and visualising what it is that they want, even if it might not come to them in the way that they want in the timeframe that they want.

If you want big outcomes, you need to take big actions

The last lesson that I wanted to share is that if you want big outcomes, you need to take big steps. A lot of people don’t chase their dreams because it seems too big, too crazy or too unachievable, or perhaps they hold the dream, but they don’t want to do the things that they need to do to bring it into reality. I remind people that everyone feels fearful when taking big steps, whether it’s buying a house, whether it’s hiring a team member, or joining a course or program or working with a coach. The fear is always a very real part of change, but if you want to achieve amazing things, you need to take big chances. And that is certainly what we have done in our journey to buying our house on the water by the beach. I’d like to share that even though the path to get here has been rocky, I am pinching myself every day, feeling so happy and grateful to be living by the water. And it has certainly been worth the heartache on the journey to get here. And this is definitely something that applies in business as well. When you do get to what it is that you were chasing, it is worth the struggles that you went through to get there.

To sum up today, the three biggest lessons I have learned from buying our beach home.

1. You might get the things that you want in a slightly different way than planned, but it might even be better than what you had originally wanted.
2. Never give up on your dreams, even if they seem big and crazy and like you’re hitting road bump after road bump. Never give up the faith.
3. If you want to achieve big outcomes, you need to take big steps to shift you closer to making those dreams a reality.
